Frequently Asked Questions

1. At what age should my child first see a dentist?

International guidance recommends a first dental visit by the child's first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. The first visit is mostly about familiarising your child with the clinic, checking that the teeth and jaws are developing normally, and giving you advice on brushing, feeding and preventing decay — not treatment. Starting early is also the most reliable way to prevent dental anxiety later.

2. Why do baby teeth need treatment if they will fall out anyway?

Baby teeth hold the space the adult teeth will grow into, and they matter for chewing, speech and confidence. If a baby tooth is lost too early to decay, the neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap and the adult tooth may come through crooked or become trapped — which is why space maintainers exist. Untreated decay in a baby tooth can also cause pain and infection that spreads to the developing adult tooth beneath it.

3. My child is frightened of the dentist. How do you handle that?

Dental anxiety in children is very common and we plan for it. Early visits are kept short and positive, procedures are explained in language the child understands, and treatment is paced rather than rushed. For children who are very anxious, who have special needs, or who need extensive treatment, sedation dentistry and treatment under general anaesthesia are available at Saada Hospital so care can be completed safely and comfortably.

4. How can I prevent tooth decay in my child?

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste suited to your child's age, supervising until they can brush well alone. Limit sugary drinks and snacks — especially between meals and at bedtime — and avoid putting a child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Regular check-ups allow early decay to be spotted before it causes pain, and preventive treatments such as fluoride application and pit and fissure sealants add further protection to the back teeth.

5. What should I do if my child knocks out or breaks a tooth?

Contact us straight away — dental injuries are time-sensitive. If a permanent tooth is knocked out completely, hold it by the crown and not the root, do not scrub it, and if possible place it back in the socket or keep it in milk while you come in; the sooner it is replanted, the better the chance of saving it. A knocked-out baby tooth should not be replaced. Broken or displaced teeth can often be treated with splinting and fixation.

6. Do you provide braces and orthodontic treatment for children?

Saada Hospital's pediatric dental service includes interceptive orthodontic treatment, habit-breaking appliances, and the early diagnosis and treatment of jaw and teeth misalignment, along with fixed and removable orthodontic appliances. Interceptive treatment guides jaw growth while a child is still developing and can reduce or simplify the treatment needed later. An assessment determines whether early treatment is appropriate or whether it is better to wait.
