Sohar, Sultanate of Oman — Saada Hospital successfully managed a life-threatening surgical emergency involving a young woman who arrived in critical condition with severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting and significant abdominal swelling after previously seeking medical care at multiple healthcare facilities.
Recognizing the seriousness of her condition, the surgical team acted immediately. During emergency surgery, approximately 2–3 litres of infected fluid were discovered throughout the abdominal cavity. The source was identified as a severely perforated appendix causing generalized peritonitis, a dangerous condition that can become fatal without urgent treatment.
The team performed an emergency laparotomy and appendectomy, followed by extensive cleaning and drainage of the abdominal cavity to control the infection. The surgery was performed by Dr. Karem Batnijji and Dr. Rahul Shelke, General Surgery Specialists at Saada Hospital.
Following surgery, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she received continuous monitoring, intravenous antibiotics and multidisciplinary postoperative care.
The patient showed significant improvement over the following days. Her abdominal pain and swelling resolved, bowel function returned, and she was able to resume a normal diet and regain mobility. After six days of intensive treatment and monitoring, she was discharged home in stable condition.
